As more and more bacteria develop resistance to common antibiotics, there is an urgent need to advance research into new antibiotics for clinical medical use. Olga Kalinina, the new endowed professor for drug bioinformatics, is dedicated to this task. Since January of this year, the scientist has been working at the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) and Saarland University to develop new antibiotics from biologically active natural substances. Her research is supported by the Saarbrücken-based Klaus Faber Foundation with a total of 1.6 million euros until 2022.
