Detailed Description of Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the powers conferred in Section 5 of the Examination Regulations — indicated on the introductory page of the Board of Examiners — the following duties are incumbent upon the Board pursuant to the current examination regulations. In most cases, the Board fulfills these duties only in response to a petition submitted by an examination candidate. The Board of Examiners has the option of delegating individual duties; the duties currently delegated by the Board are to be found at the end of this page. Also included are duties delegated to the Board of Examiners.

General Duties of the Chairperson

  • Approval of another method for satisfying requirements pertaining to graded assessments on account of a permanent health impairment (§7 clause 9)
  • Signing the Bachelor of Science/Master of Science diploma (§20 clause 1 / §25 clause 1)
  • Passing rulings on non-successful completion of the examination leading to the Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree (§20 clause 3 / §clause 3)

Duties of the Board of Examiners

  • Appointment of examiners and assessors (§6 clause 1)
  • Crediting of periods of study, coursework and examinations/graded assessments (§8 clause 9)
  • Recognition of reasons for withdrawal or no-show pertaining to examinations/graded assessments (§9 clause 2)
  • Enabling students to take statutory maternity leave and parental leave (§9 clause 3)
  • Reviewing accusations pertaining to attempts to influence the result of an examination or section thereof by way of deception (cheating) or using impermissible aids (§9 clause 5)
  • Validity of the examination/graded assessment in the event that admission to the examination was gained through surreptitious means (§28 clause 2)
  • Reviewing the procedural decisions passed by an examiner (§29 clause 2)
  • Issuing a notification in the event of forfeiture of the right to be admitted to the degree examination in connection with progress monitoring (§13 clause 4)
  • Admission to a degree program on a part-time basis (as agreed with the registrar’s office) (§14 clause 7), exceptions to the exclusion provision pertaining to progress monitoring (§14 clause 2), and the maximum number of semesters when pursuing a degree program on a part-time basis (§14 clause 3)
  • Issuing of authorizations for assigning topics for bachelor’s and master’s theses (§18 clause 2 / §25 clause 2)
  • Assignment of bachelor’s/master’s thesis topics in the event of untimely application (§18 clause 3 / §25 clause 3)
  • Extension of the completion time for bachelor’s and master’s theses in cases of hardship (§18 clause 4 / §25 clause 4)
  • Waiver of obligation of submitting an electronic version of the bachelor’s/master’s thesis (§18 clause 8 / §25 clause 8)
  • Passing rulings on admission to the examination leading to the Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree (§19 clause 3 / §26 clause 3)
  • Issuing of rulings pertaining to satisfaction of the admission requirements for the Master of Science degree program (§23 clause 2)
  • Establishing equivalent substitute graded assessments for the examinations/graded assessments specified in the examination regulations pertaining to the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree courses (§30 clause 3) of 19 February 2004

Duties Delegated by the Board of Examiners

 The Board of Examiners has delegated the following duties:

  • Issuing of rulings pertaining to satisfaction of the admission requirements for the Master of Science degree program (§23 clause 2): delegated to the joint committee of bioinformatics professors Volkhard Helms, Thomas Lengauer and Hans-Peter Lenhof
  • Establishing the equivalency of coursework and graded assessments for which a ruling has already been passed by the Board of Examiners or in accordance with an expert opinion (§8 clause 6).
  • Approval by the board chairperson to make an additional attempt to successfully complete an examination insofar as a recent medical certificate or expert opinion issued by a public health officer (this can also be required in cases of legitimate doubt) or proof of hardship (§9 clause 2)  has been furnished.

Duties Delegated to the Board of Examiners

On behalf of the Board of the Center for Bioinformatics, the Board of Examiners passes rulings pertaining to the expansion of offerings in the various course categories for one or more terms. (cf. §5 clause 3) of the Degree Program Regulations)
