Bachelor and Master Thesis

Bachelor and Master Seminar

Before registering for the bachelor’s/master’s thesis, each student must have successfully completed a bachelor’s/master’s seminar directly related to the topic of the bachelor’s/master’s thesis, in which a presentation is given on the planned topic (§ 7 para. 2 and § 9 para. 2 of the study regulations for the bachelor’s and master’s degree program in Bioinformatics dated January 21, 2016).

Thesis Registration

The Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis must be registered with the examination office no later than one semester after successful participation in the Bachelor’s/Master’s seminar. The registration of the thesis includes the submission of the presentation slides of the Bachelor’s/Master’s seminar (can be sent as pdf-file to the examination secretariat). After this deadline, a Bachelor seminar must be successfully completed again (§ 7 para. 3 and § 9 para.3 of the study regulations for the Bachelor and Master program Bioinformatics dated January 21, 2016).

If you want to register a thesis, please come to the examination office with the completed form. The form must first be stamped by the examination office! Then bring the stamped form to your supervisor (who will sign it and send it back to the examination office).

External Master Thesis

Topics for external master theses can only be issued by a bioinformatics professor/junior research group leader who is a member of the Center for Bioinformatics (CBI) at Saarland University.

Professors/junior research group leaders of other universities, institutes or companies cannot issue topics for a master thesis.

If you want to do an external master thesis, please contact a bioinformatics professor/junior research group leader of the CBI before working out concrete plans with external groups and before starting to work on the topic.

Thesis Submission

1) Three copies of the Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis (stapled or bound) must be submitted to the Examination Office together with the following form.

2) In addition, an electronic version in a common file format (on CD) must be submitted. A CD burner can be borrowed for a deposit. Please contact the responsible examination office for this purpose.

3) The written elaboration of the thesis must be accompanied by a signed written assurance that you have written the thesis independently and that you have not used any aids other than those indicated.

4) You must certify in writing that the printed and the electronic version of the written elaboration of the Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis correspond.

Colloquium

The independent execution of the Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis is examined in a 30-minute colloquium, which is usually held after the submission of the written work of the Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis and in which the methods used and results achieved are presented. In a subsequent discussion you should show that you can defend your work against critical questions. One of the examiners should be the topic author of the thesis. The performance in the colloquium is included in the grading of the thesis (§ 34 para. 1 of the Subject Specific Regulations for the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Program Bioinformatics of Saarland University to the Common Examination Regulations for the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programs of Faculty 6 (Faculty of Science and Technology I – Mathematics and Computer Science) of January 21, 2016).

Assessment

The Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis is assessed by the first and second assessor(s). Both give a written, graded opinion 2 months after submission of the bachelor thesis and 3 months after submission of the master thesis (§ 23 para. 5 of the Common Examination Regulations for the Bachelor and Master Programs of Faculty 6 (Faculty of Science and Technology I – Mathematics and Computer Science) of July 2, 2015).

Application for the Certificate

If all the required achievements have been completed, you can apply for your graduation certificate. When the final thesis reports have arrived, the certificate can be issued. You will be informed by the examination office in due time when you can pick up your certificate.

If you need a provisional certificate of completion before submitting the two evaluations and issuing the certificate, you will need written confirmation from both evaluators that they have given the thesis a grade of at least 4.0.
